Diagnose Chargers Before the Technician Arrives

Is your EV charging network losing money on unnecessary technician visits?

The rapid expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure is a crucial step towards a sustainable future. However, behind the scenes of this growth, many charging operators are unknowingly hemorrhaging funds through inefficient maintenance practices.

Sending a technician to an EV charger simply to diagnose the problem is becoming one of the most costly habits in the industry today.

This "break-fix" approach, while seemingly straightforward, leads to significant financial drain and prolonged downtime, impacting both operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

The core of the issue lies in the costly nature of blind dispatches. When a charging station reports an outage, the immediate response is often to dispatch a technician. However, without prior diagnostic information, this technician's first task becomes identifying the fault, meaning the initial visit is purely for assessment, not repair.

This leads to a substantial portion of outage downtime occurring before a technician even sets foot on-site. This "wait before dispatch" period can be surprisingly long.

According to the 2026 Reliability Report, while the median wait from issue identification to the creation of the first work order might be three days, a significant percentage of issues languish for eight days or more, with some exceeding a daunting 30-day waiting period before any field action is taken. This pre-dispatch waiting time accounts for approximately half of the total recovery clock for certain issues, highlighting a critical bottleneck in the repair process.

The financial implications of this inefficiency are stark. More than a third of outages requiring repeat visits are responsible for nearly half of the total network downtime.

This cycle of dispatch, diagnosis, and potentially repeat visits inflates operational and maintenance (O&M) expenditures considerably. Furthermore, the extended median repair times, which can stretch into weeks or even months without proper upfront visibility, negatively impact the reliability and availability of charging assets.

The solution lies in a shift towards intelligence-led operations, specifically by embracing pre-dispatch scoping. By treating telemetry data and fault signals as qualified evidence, operators can begin to isolate root causes before dispatching any personnel.

This proactive approach allows for a more informed decision-making process, ensuring that when a technician is dispatched, they are equipped with the necessary knowledge, parts, and permissions to resolve the issue on the first trip. In essence, it's about diagnosing smarter, not harder, by leveraging available data to avoid costly trial-and-error in the field.

This transformation not only protects the bottom line by slashing O&M expenditure but also ensures that valuable charging assets remain online and available for the growing number of EV drivers.
